Public House Research
For my Public House Research, I researched Bauer Media, a large Media company which distributes Magazines, TV boradcasting and Radio Broadcasting. These include Q Magazine, 4Music TV and Kiss FM. These are all popular products which are widely known but everyone and are relevant in genre to what I am creating. This research showed me how much roughly large media companies can earn in revenue and how many people they employ gobally. This helps me with my magazine because i can see if my magazine is successful how BIG it can get and how much it could earn and how widely/gobally it could appeal to an audience.
Ideology
This is the Ideology relating to the Magazine i am planning to create, this shows my understanding of the product and how i am going to use it in relation to main selling points, target audience and what the mast head represents. The Ideology I wrote is there for me as a guide in some aspects so i dont forget what the purpose of my magazine is and how it will differ to others for it to sell well but it is also me sharing my knowledge and inspirations of how my ideas came about, and how it will publicly appeal to really everyone of a young adult age.
Market Research
The market reasearch is to indicate the specifics of my magazine - Price, Genre, Artists they want used, Articles theyd like to see etc, this research is important for My Magazine because for example if it was being sold then what the audience/public would like to see for it to be able to sell successfully. I created my survey on Zoomerang.com and shared it on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to get a varied repsonses from my friends and people i have met and chatted to from across the web, so i could get varied responses, and this was succesful becuase even though the results showed a majority it also showed variety in answers. - When i create my Magazine and I am thinkning about Front Cover, Contents and DPS i will relate back to this to get the best results.
DPS Analysis
The same as the Contents Analysis the DPS' are from Rolling Stone and Billboard, in many aspects this is similar analysis. I analysied the image (position and stance), the Language used and the typography and colouring of the text/background. I looked at how these things to show the artists in the article and how it is represented through them and how this represents the magazine, this is their main article and it shows what the magazine is aiming towards. For example the DPS in Billboard is about Adam Lambert and, as explained, he is sexualised in every spects from the Language, his stance/expression and the colours used while Rolling Stones is quite mature and serious because of the formal text, sepia colouring and and the boys are posed in thinking poses. This for me shows that everything from Layout, Language to colouring sets the tone for the whole article and the magazine so when i do my DPS from my Music Magazine i should take this into consideration with my Language making sure its appropriate, the Image is resembling the right message and the colouring is putting across the right message (e.g. bright if its happy, dark if its sad or mysterious etc).
Contents Page Analysis
These Contents pages are from magazines releavant for my genre, I chose Billbaord and Rolling Stones magazine because they are the same in genre but layout is completely different in both, even though both use loads of small text, Billboard is much more cluttered and compact while Rolling Stones is more spread out, so i can see if in consideration of my magazine, what it would look like if i went down either route, also Billboard and Rolling stones use different colours like Billboard uses a bright blue with an addition of a kaleidoscope of colours on the left hand side on the 'chart music', so this shows me that, for my magazine, if i use bright and vibrant colours it will grab attention and guide the read to the page they want to while Rolling stones is mostly red and beige, this still grabs attention because the red is bright but isnt as powerful. Also there use of images such as in both magazines they only use a couple but in Rolling Stones they are spread out while in Billboard they are quite compact again much like there text.
Front Cover Analysis x3
I chose 3 magazine front covers that are in relevant to the genre that my Music Magazine will be (Pop-Rock), so i chose Q Magazine, Rolling Stones and Billboard Magazine. All of them where quite similar in layout but with the use (obviously) with different images incuding different artists and image position one using Head Shot, other using full-shot and other using mid shot, this gives me different aspects on which i could use for my Magazine front cover- how ceratin articles would be represented/given an importance, and how i could lay it out with the text, i also analysed the images and text to show my understanding towards what they represent, this will contribute to my magazine because i have to be aware that with the images i take and the text i use what it would represent to the audience and how i want my magazine to be taken, and is what i wanted to show being put across clearly.
I created my front cover and contents page on Microsoft Publisher, I believe I did well since it was one of the first Magazine drafts I've ever done, this gave me an insight into how to used the software and how to structure a magazine front cover & contents page, this will help me in future references when i have other tasks like this one and when it comes to my exam/main task of creating a Music Magazine, where to put the text and images and how the layout effects the sales and presenatation/represenation of the magazine. Even though, as you can clearly see, the layout is not spectacular but you can see what the articles would be about and the contents page clearly highlights the key important pages with pictures to go with them to help the reader, these images represent the categories given on the contents page. I think i need to improve on the use of images on the front cover in future, as it is to cluttered and looks messy, I would use more relevant images and use less of them and spread them out while have one MAIN image.
